AOP- Best practice in assisting

Being a member of the AOP allowed for the opportunity to attend a webinar led by Ira Gioretti which was all about being a great assistant. The panel consisted of professional photographers and assistants who had varied discussions- from shared experiences to asking questions about what makes a good assistant, gaining insight from one another and sharing with those who tuned in.

Ira Gioretti is a board member of the AOP and works internationally for well known brands such as Disney and Gaytimes.

Key points and top tips

·       Be personable when introducing yourself

·       Having a good sense of humor and lightheartedness to lift atmosphere

·       Be present and aware throughout participation

·       Don’t be afraid to ask questions

·       BE HONEST (it's ok not to know everything) don’t wing it all the time

·       Technically- know how to operate software, load film, troubleshoot etc.

Being a great assistant is a combination of knowing skills and being likeable. Knowing how to hold a conversation and being pleasant company whilst being able to efficiently complete tasks that need to be done. A happy blend of resourcefulness and understanding what each different person wants.

Some of the attending photographers prefer assistants who are extremely technically proficient if they're working on high intensity jobs, letting their character fall to the backburner whereas other assistants are more forgiving with people learning on the job and growing beside them if they like having them around because they bring good energy and try hard.
